WBENC 11th annual salute honors nationwide WBEs and Top Corporations

The 2008 Salute to Women’s Busi- ness Enterprises: The Power of Progress was held on March 20 at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, D.C. WBENC’s annual black-tie event celebrated the contribu- tions of WBEs in the United States econ- omy and spotlighted the corporations and government agencies that provide WBEs with growth opportunities.

WBENC President and CEO Linda J. Denny also honored America’s Top Corporations for Women’s Business Enterprises for 2007.  Also honored and brought on stage where the 14 WBENC Stars. *See cover story for the WBENC Stars Also honored was William “Bill”Alcorn, JCPenney senior vice president, controller and chief procurement offi- cer, who was among the group of dedi- cated professionals to start WBENC 11 years ago and served as the council’s first chair of the board. The evening ended with dessert and dancing.

Fontaine named Continental Airlines director of diversity

Continental Airlines has announced the
appointment of Diedra Fontaine to the
position of director of diversity and sales
development. In this role, Fontaine will
manage Continental’s important diversity
initiatives and will enhance sales
in key, niche markets.

“Diedra’s appointment to this
position underscores Continental’s commitment to diversity and our mis-
sion to reach all markets. Diedra has consistently contributed to the suc-
cess of Continental and will be a tremendous asset in her new role,” said
Monisa Cline, Continental’s staff vice president of North America sales.

Fontaine previously served as the director of sales for the South
Central region, managing the corporate and travel agency sales efforts in
several states. Since beginning her career with Continental in 1990 as an
auditor, Fontaine has held numerous leadership positions and increased
Continental’s profile in diverse communities.

An active member of the community, Fontaine serves on several
boards including the Ronald McDonald House and the Ensemble
Theatre. In recognition of her achievements, she was named a Woman of
Distinction by the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation and a Legacy Hero
Alumnae from Texas Southern University. Fontaine is a recipient of the
Founders Award from the Thurgood Marshall College Fund.
Fontaine earned a bachelor’s degree in business computer informa-
tion systems from the University of North Texas and an MBA from Texas
Southern University.
